New Restaurant opening soon in Cobh

The opening of a new restaurant always excites me as it is all new, no expectations, no bad memories of a wasted meal but only the anticipation of something amazing. So when I heard that Simone and Trixie of Interior Living are working on the interior of a new restaurant due to open soon in Cobh, my little antenna peaked up and I listened very carefully...Simone actually called one of the partners, Charlie Daly, and I had a lovely chat with him.

The new restaurant is called 'Gilbert' and is located in Pierse Square in Cobh. Partners Charlie Daly & David Bird have secured Franc Coutiele (former of Candlelight, Wicklow), a French chef who ensures that the high quality standards set by David & Charlie are met.

To set the stage for the food, the restaurant is decorated in French Bistro style. The chef will focus on creating outstanding food sourced locally as much as possible. The food can be described as clean, good honest food. Of course, I have not tasted it yet as the opening is scheduled for the end of August but I trust Simone Kelly in her estimate.

While chatting to Charlie, I asked when the official opening is scheduled for and he said it depends......on what you may ask....believe it or not, they can't find staff. Yeap, you heard correctly. In times like these, good staff is still hard to come by and both partners rather not open the restaurant on schedule than to let the customer face bad service. I admire that in a foodie but please please....I like to go there and eat....so they have to find good staff soon. If you are interested or know someone who might be, please give Charlie a call on 086-8365445.

Can't wait for the doors to open....

Recently my son and I were visiting family in Cobh. Went for the early bird in Gilbert's. €20 for a two course meal. Was one of the best meals we've had in a long time. Terrific value and we'll certainly be back. Gilbert's could compete with any 4 star restaurant anywhere.

Hi Anonymous,

So sorry that you had a bad experience. I will have to go myself to see if they gone down in their standards. That is the problem with most restaurants - they start great and then let standards slip. Watch this space for an update soon
