My weekend

Wasn't that a great weekend? I had a ball. C & K got married on Saturday and I was asked to make the favours....so I made 3 types if truffles, dark chocolate with Cointreau, milk chocolate with cinnamon and white chocolate with rum ....

I went to Roman House in North Main Street to get the favour boxes but ended up with having two different types which I decorated with purple ribbon. They looked lovely. The ceremony and the celebration was held in Pastis in Glencairn and it was the most perfect setting for such a celebration. The weather was perfect, the ceremony was romantic, the setting was stunning and the food....out of this world. The wedding party was very small, just closest friends and family and I was deeply honoured that I was included. Fiona Tricot is front of house and she truly managed to hire the right staff for the restaurant. Even at 1am the girls were serving drinks and coffee with a smile. Head chef and husband of Fiona, Stephane Tricot is a master of his kitchen. The menu had 3 options each and my salad with conference pears and Roquefort, roasted walnuts and balsamic & honey dressing put me in the right mood for the rest of the meal which was pan fried sea bass with lemon & caper sauce, baby roast potatoes and vegetables (and they had the right crunch and weren't cooked to a mushy consistence). My creme brulee was perfect with a thin later of sugar crunch and a set custard underneath. The food consoled me for the fact that I was driving back the same day and couldn't enjoy the wine. The red wine was a Idrias Abiego Somontano 2005, a mix of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tempranillo, a dark cherry colour with a long finish. I could only have one glass with the food and wished that the bottle would have been opened a bit earlier as the tannin was a bit too strong for my own taste....but by the end of the meal, the full intense flavour of the wine came through. The white option was a Domaine Bellevue 2006, a Sauvignon which went down well with my fellow diners.
The cake was made by Posh Nosh in Rathcormack. A chocolate cake int he shape of 2 hearts. It was moist, rich and sooooooo good that you just knew it will be bad for your waistline. The day was perfect and I was happy for C & K as they deserved this perfect day....so romantic that even I shed a tear....(and that almost never happens). I was home by 2:30 in the morning and feel asleep with a big smile on my face as the day proved that there are fairy tales...

Sunday was spent in a lazy state with playing with my dogs, falling asleep on the sofa and watching Germany beating Poland quite easily (seriously, Poland played well).

Hope you all had a great weekend as well....tell me all about it if you like, and wishing you a great week ahead.

Hi Elke,

what a romantic week-end for you!

I returned from a trip, as I visited the TOP german wineries Keller, Wittmann, Emrich-Schönleber and Breuer and tasted the whole 07 portfolio.

Fasten-your-seatbelts, the german vintage 2007 is outstanding and maybe one of the best ever. Stay tuned for my report........

Liebe Grüße,
Martin

P.S. Here are some photos:

Hi Martin, the weekend was indeed very romantic. If I ever start writing romance novels, I will use this experience.

Would have loved to join you in the BBQ...the seafood BBQ looked yummy...and you can lock me in the cellar of Keller (how appropriate)anytime...;-)

Can't wait to read your report.

Oh yes, we will have fun in the cellar! ;-)

Besides the 07 wines, Klaus-Peter Keller opened a 1953 "Hubacker" Auslese which was such clean, fresh and young, simply unbelievable. We all thought that the wine is max. 5 years old. Impressively demonstrated the aging potential of Riesling.

Also we had some terrific burgundies from 1966&1971 and some nice other wines.

BTW, the sea-food was brought via plane from a friend who returned from Norway and therefore was very, very fresh.

Now you got my mouth watering. Does Keller have an Irish distributor? Cause the wine sounds amazing. A young wine that has the depth of an older one.....you got me curious....

I am shure the winery Keller has an dealer in Ireland. Send a mail to the winery and they will give you the address. Here is the mail-address from the winery Keller: info@weingut-keller.de

I strongly recommend you 2007 "von der Fels" which taste like a Grand Cru Riesling/"Großes Gewächs" and has an outstanding PQR for 15 Euro.

Or you can order them at Pinard-de-picard:

Finally, for further information please read the reports (engl.) at the winery website from John Gilman.

Martin, Martin you are getting me into trouble. Read the report and the Riesling seems to be one the best coming from the Rheinhessen area so I will send an email to the vineyard asking for the distributor. Otherwise I will follow your advise and order online from Pinard.
Thanks for all the handy tips.It is very hard to find good German wine here as most of them are of the sweet variety and I am very happy indeed that my friends stopped giving me Liebfrauenmilch which I normally gave to the bin men and post man at Christmas ;-)

Elke,

the winery Keller is considered to be the best winery in Germany!

Hi martin, followed your advice and contacted the winery. They came back quite quickly but unfortunately, they don't have a distributor here in Ireland. So I might have to order from Pinard. Thanks for the tip.

That is sad! But 07 Keller "von der Fels" is really worth the effort to order from Germany. BTW, here is an article a month ago from Eric Asimov/NYTimes who praised 06 "von der Fels" . Take into consideration that 07 is much better........
